Say it, Sign it, Remember it!
Sign2Learn has developed a range of programmes to support parents, carers, childminders and Early Years staff to use sign language with babies, toddlers, pre-school and school age children.
Sign a Story and Signs4Maths
The EYFSP moderation team in Luton have become increasingly aware that there are many areas in which children are under achieving due to a lack of vocabulary, rather than ability.
Why is vocabulary so important?
Good communication skills help children and young people escape from disadvantage.
Vocabulary at age five has been found to be the best predictor (from a range of measures at ages five and ten) of whether children who experienced social deprivation in childhood were able to 'buck the trend' and escape poverty in later adult life.
(Blanden J (2006) Bucking the Trend - What enables those who are disadvantaged in childhood to succeed later in life? London: Department for Work and Pensions.)
In partnership with the Luton Borough Council, we have developed Sign a Story and Signs4Maths. They have been successfully implemented across Early Years and Key Stage 1 settings in Luton. Click for more details...:
With over 8 years experience in providing training to Early Years settings, we have developed a very comprehensive training package to teach you how to introduce Sign Language successfully into your setting. Our latest project, Finger Fonics, has been extremely popular in many Preschool settings and is linked to Phases 1-3 of 'Letters and Sounds'. Staff Training or regular sessions in the classrooms can be arranged and tailored to your requirements.
We can also offer baby and toddler signing classes for private individuals and groups, parent and baby groups and Childrens Centres. See our Baby Signing site for details: www.signingbabies.co.uk
